Royal Palace of Olite
Plaza de Carlos III el Noble
31390 Olite

The Royal Palace of Olite, the residence of the kings of Navarre until the union with Castile in 1512, is one of the most interesting Gothic civil complexes in Europe.  Built on the remains of the former roman “praesidium” of Oligitum, the palace underwent various alterations between the 12th – 14th centuries, however it was Charles III, the Noble, who made the most important modifications from the beginning of the 15th century onwards, thereby attracting numerous Spanish and European masters to his court. The construction work adapted well to the already existing fortifications to give a graceful and elegant profile. The cultural itinerary can be completed by a visit to the original Old Palace (now a Tourist Parador), to the Gothic Church of St María and the Romanesque Church of St Pedro, boasting cloisters and a slender Gothic tower topped with a steeple that rivals those of the Royal Palace itself.
