Monastery of Irache
31240 Ayegui
Whilst the documentary evidence of
the Benedictine Monastery of Irache dates back as far as 958, it
was not until the 11th century that the monastery reached
prosperity, when García de Nájera converted it into a pilgrim
hospice under the rectorship of the abbot San Veremundo. In the
12th century, the great abbot’s temple was built with a
Romanesque front part and Cistercian body. The monastery once
again flourished in the 16th century when it was incorporated into
the congregation of St Benito of Valladolid; the Plateresque
cloisters were constructed at this time, designed by Martín de
Oyarzábal, and the Puerta Especiosa doorway, designed by Juan de
Aguirre. In 1615, a University was founded at Irache. Subsequently
the monastery has been a hospital (Carlist Wars) and religious
school. It currently houses an important ethnographic collection,
library and documentary archives of the Ethnological Museum of
Navarre, to be opened to the public once the current renovation
work is completed.
