Gustavo de Maeztu Museum
San Nicolás, I
31200 Estella
The
museum is located in the former Palace of the Kings of Navarre,
also known as the Palace of the Duques de Granada de Ega. It is a
Romanesque civil construction with storied capitals; the capital
worked by Martín of Logroño narrates the fight of Roldán with
the giant called Ferragut. The building was re-opened in 1991,
after renovation work directed by the architect Miguel A. Alonso
del Val. The exhibition is centred around the figure of Gustavo de
Maeztu y Whitney (1887 – 1947), a painter and writer born in
Vitoria but who came to live in Estella until his death. The
museum holds many of Gustavo’s paintings and much of his written
work, centred on the female figure, portraits, wine cellars and
landscapes. There are three facets characteristic of his style:
themes that are either cosmopolitan, picturesque or marginal. In
addition to a selection of drawings of different genres and
techniques, there are also exhibits showing the research work
carried out by Maeztu in the art world, referring to his literary
inclinations.
Opening times: Weekdays
