Church of St María de Eunate
31152 Muruzábal

A harmonious, primitive-Gothic style building (around 1170), perhaps a former hospital of St John or cemetery church to serve the Way of St James, which passes alongside. The church has an octagonal floor plan surrounded by cloisters and it is completed with a semicircular, pentagonal apse in its interior. It is supported by columns which are aligned under the eaves and alternate with the gargoyles, shaped like human heads. The walls between the columns are decorated with alabaster windows and blind windows. Of the two doors, the northern one, opposite the Way of St James, is more ornate than the western one. The interior vault ribs, converging in the centre, show the influence of Moslem architecture, very characteristic of the cultural syncretism of St James. The proportionate layout of the church is similar to the Church of the Santo Sepulcro (Holy Sepulchre) of Torres del Río, on the Way of St James in Navarre, close to Viana. The statue of the Virgin Mary is a reproduction of a former one that disappeared.
